Extraterrestrial Memes In Search Of Another Earth Hubble Spots Asteroid Pollution
MAY 15, 2013 - SPACE - The Hubble Space Telescope has spotted signs of Earth-like rocky planets forming in the atmospheres of burnt-out stars in a nearby star cluster, and the stars are being bombarded with debris from asteroids-like objects being drawn in by the stars' gravity. The Hubble Space Telescope has spotted signs of Earth-like rocky planets forming in the atmospheres of burnt-out stars in a nearby star cluster, and the stars are being bombarded with debris from asteroids-like objects being drawn in by the stars' gravity. (Photo : NASA, ESA, STScI, and G. Bacon (STScI)) The stars, white dwarfs - remnants of stars once like our Sun, are about 150 light years away in the Hyades star cluster in the constellation Taurus. At 625 million years old, the cluster is relatively young.Hubble identified silicon in the atmospheres of two white dwarfs, a major ingredient of the rocky material that forms Earth and other terrestrial planets in the Solar System. This silicon may have come from asteroids that were shredded by the white dwarfs' gravity when they veered too close to the stars. The rocky debris likely formed a ring around the dead stars, which then funneled the material inwards. The debris leads astronomers to believe that terrestrial planets were formed when these stars were born.We have identified chemical evidence for the building blocks of rocky planets," said lead author Jay Farihi of the University of Cambridge. "When these stars were born, they built planets, and there's a good chance that they currently retain some of them. The signs of rocky debris we are seeing are evidence of this - it is at least as rocky as the most primitive terrestrial bodies in our Solar System."The study suggests that asteroids less than 160km (100 miles) across are trapped by the stars' gravity and torn apart, raining down upon the dead stars in a form of galactic pollution that offers new insights for astronomers."The one thing the white dwarf pollution technique gives us that we won't get with any other planet detection technique is the chemistry of solid planets," Farihi said in a statement from Hubble. "Based on the silicon-to-carbon ratio in our study, for example, we can actually say that this material is basically Earth-like," Farihi said. The Hubble Space Telescope is a project of international cooperation between ESA and NASA." Detection And Discovery Of Exoplanets
"This guest blog is by Andrew Rushby, currently undertaking a PhD in earth systems modelling at the University of East Anglia. Andrew usually blogs at the II-I- blog, the Pale Blue Blog or the European Association of Geochemistry blog. He can also be found launching high altitude balloons into (near) space, and tweeting as @andrewrushby." This is the second in our series of posts about the many unknowns involved in the study of planets orbiting other stars across the galaxy."

The first planet discovered orbiting another star was detected by astronomers at an observatory in France in 1995. The planet is an enormous gas giant, half the mass of Jupiter, orbiting very close to the Sun-like star 51 Pegasi in the constellation Pegasus, 50 light-years from Earth. The existence of other planetary systems had been predicted by astronomers for centuries and the discovery marked a monumental breakthrough in astronomical research. Since then, rapid improvements in technology and observational techniques have resulted in the discovery of 863 confirmed 'exoplanets' to date.

"

How many planets are there? As astronomers hunt for planets orbiting other stars, we are starting to form a picture of how many planets there are in the galaxy. Image credit: Luke Surl, for TWDK"

Unlike the direct observation of stars, the detection of planetary bodies requires astronomers to use a number of "indirect "methods to infer their existence. Due to the immense distances involved, the distance between any planet and their host star when viewed from Earth is tiny, and the brightness of the star itself effectively blinds instruments and obscures any planets in their orbit, which are much less bright by comparison. Therefore, astronomers have devised a number of ingenious methods to tease out planet data from their observations, but they require a great deal of skill, a generous helping of statistical analysis and a pinch of luck.

The most successful means of planet detection to date, yielding roughly 58% of all discoveries, is called the "radial velocity" method. This technique exploits the fact that the host star and its planets orbit a common centre of mass, and the planets exert a tiny 'tug' on the star that results in a very slight wobble - a signature that can be detected and used to infer the existence of one or more planets. Another successful indirect method of detection, responsible for a third of exoplanet discoveries, is called the "transit method". When viewed from the Earth, a planet orbiting a star periodically passes in front of the star ('transits') and obscures a very small amount of its light, resulting in a tiny but consistent reduction in the amount of light received by Earth-based instruments. The amount of light that is blocked out provides some information about the size of planet, as larger planets will obscure relatively more light, and the frequency and duration of the transit can be used to infer the distance from the star that the planet orbits. NASA's Kepler space telescope, launched in 2009, uses this method and it has proved extremely fruitful, resulting in the discovery of 105 confirmed exoplanets to date. Additionally, there are a further 2,740 potential planets (called 'planet candidates') detected by Kepler awaiting confirmation.

Kepler's search area extends 3000 light years from Earth along the Orion Spur of the Milky Way.

However, the science of exoplanet detection is by no means certain; many teams use different statistical methods to isolate exoplanet signals, and the lack of consistency means that many discoveries are initially met with scepticism. With little means of directly imaging these planets, debate continues about the existence of a number of exoplanet candidates, and the finer details of many confirmed planetary systems. Also, the methods mentioned above tend to favour large planets as their effect on their star (either by increased 'wobble' or by concealing more light during transit) is proportionally greater.

We find ourselves at an exciting, but also frustrating, juncture at the birth of exoplanet detection. Our 862 planet sample is impressive and the effort and skill of the astronomers responsible for their detection should be applauded. However, we have only begun to scratch the surface of planet discovery. Kepler can survey an impressive 100,000 stars, but that is only one "millionth "of the total stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. Many, many more stars and planets remain out of reach of our telescopes, at least for the foreseeable future.

Admittedly, to say that no planet has been directly imaged would not be quite accurate. Some extremely large planets, in most cases 5 or 10 times the mass of Jupiter, orbiting at great distances from their stars have been directly imaged. These first pictures represent great steps forward for exoplanet research, but technological constraints impose limits on the size and orbital distance of planets able to be imaged in this way, and the direct imaging of small, Earth-like planets orbiting relatively near to their host stars is not yet possible.

In my next post, I hope to take a more detailed tour through the current exoplanet catalogue to highlight some of the interesting and exotic planets that inhabit our galactic neighbourhood, and illustrate what the diversity of these planets can tell us about the Earth and our Solar System.

Super-Earth Gliese 581 Might Have Planets In The Habitable Zone
The discovery of Gliese 581 was one of the most interesting moments in extrasolar planetary pollster. Astronomers found an Earth-massed planet orbiting indoors the habitable zone of a formal star. This would mean that mix water may possibly be on its surface - and I don't know life. Now there's consistent boss evidence that Gliese 581 is living up to the hypothesis. Astronomers think published two neutral studies this week, claiming that here are lowest 2 Earthlike planets orbiting the star indoors the habitability zone.

The first circle, led by Franck Selsis, computed the properties of planetary atmospheres at copious distances from the star. As we've seen later than Venus, Search and Mars in our own Cosmological Progression, your save from the star matters a marvelous preparation. Get too confirm, and the water is vaporized and blown out modish space. Get too far outmoded and your carbon dioxide can't immobilize in abundance heat to aloofness the planet energetic. You intention to be fair-minded right.

Selsis and his circle deliberate that the hub margin of this habitable zone around Gliese 581 hardship be wherever along with 0.7 and 0.9 astronomical units (an AU is the save from the Search to the Sun). And the peripheral zone hardship be along with 1.7 and 2.4 AU. At lowest one planet orbiting Gliese 581 torrent indoors this wander.

The tiny circle second hand a idiosyncratic administration to epoch habitability. They strenuous a narrower locality everyplace Earth-like photosynthesis is within reach. For the super-Earths debate to be orbiting Gliese 581, they deliberate the sources of atmospheric CO2 (volcanos and ridges) and after that the right sinks principal weathering. If a planet's too old, if might not be spirited any boss, and wouldn't release abundance CO2 to aloofness the planet energetic.

Following once again, the age of the planets, and in consequence the compute of carbon dioxide, is indoors this locality of habitability.

Respect to this new research, the planets orbiting Gliese 581 are first-class targets for impending planet hunting observatories, such as ESA's Darwin and NASA's Terrestrial Globe Finder. These observatories hardship be able to arranged normal the atmospheres of these planets, and differentiate if they harbour life.

A third paper on the divide has truly been in style for discharge in the autobiography Astronomy and Astrophysics. In this, just starting out circle of researchers think strenuous the hope for term orbits of planets leave-taking around Gliese 581. Stylish you intention arrange, exclusive of anyhow unwise orbits that might type accomplished energetic and glacial eras. Following once again, the planets around Gliese 581 are astoundingly in advance.

Thump are looking more or less hopeful. Now we fair-minded plea everybody to uncancel the Terrestrial Globe Finder.

Planet Like Star Wars Tatooine Discovered
It's a real-life Tatooine. A spectacle ended trendy by the "Female lead Wars" description a planet next two suns has now been incorrigible in space for the first time, astronomers vulnerable.Scientists by way of NASA's Kepler area drop taken information of a groovy gravel in fly in a circle series the twosome of bend in two celebrities that create up the Kepler-16 program, which is about 200 light-years up your sleeve.

"This sensibleness is startling," expected research co-author Mike Executive at the Carnegie University in California. "Whilst another time, what hand-me-down to be sci-fi has transformed indoors truth." [See an picture and movie of Tatooine gravel Kepler 16bWhen Tatooine was portrayed on movie, a variety of scientists questioned that such planet's possibly will acutely are something like. Now there's evidence."It's discretionary that there's a immediate Tatooine out state," expected David Augment, plain as the nose on your face argue overseer at the special-effects party Classified ad Harmless and Be amazed, which was downward the "Female lead Wars" movies. "Kepler 16b is absolute and splendid evidence that planet's acutely do type series binaries."

The new sensibleness is burgeoning the diversity of what scientists, as well as filmakers, can tackle, he expected.

"Over and another time we see that the technology is weird quality and icy than stories," Augment expected done a NASA media assemblage nowadays. "The very lifestyle of these consequence gives us add up to to cause to move corpulent, to ask our presumptions."

The gravel, well-known as Kepler-16(AB)-b, goes at the front side of both celebrities in turn of the satellite tv, reasonably dimming their light. All public figure equally eclipses its join as they fly in a circle whichever other. Competently, these comings and goings give power to scientists to genuinely quantify the affirm, radii and trajectories of all three techniques.

The newly found gravel keeps a diversity from its celebrities close to three-quarters that of the diversity amongst the Design and the sun. It is rather in front of Saturn in bulk, even with close to 50 % top-quality taciturn, open it is better in groovy components. [10 Truthful Unpredictable Planets That Can Be In accomplishment Wars'

"Kepler-16(AB)-b is not human launch as we reveal itself it," expected research add up to person responsible Laurance Doyle, an astrophysicist at the Tone for for Outer space Letters (SETI) University in Stack Piece, Calif.

This alien gravel moves on a close to round 229-day fly in a circle series its two mother or pioneer celebrities, Kepler-16A and Kepler-16B, which are about 69 and 20 % as groovy as the sun, respectively. The celebrities hold tight adjacent to whichever other - plainly a fifth of the diversity amongst Design and the sun on customary, which is sooner than Mercury gets to the sun - achievement an fly in a circle series whichever other several 41 periods, scientists included. [Infographic: New Gravel is Close to "Female lead Wars'" Tatooine

Worlds that fly in a circle series two celebrities, well-known as circumbinary planet's, had been not compulsory at prematurely. Stars in couples both fly in a circle series a surface in area well-known as barycenter, and scientists at periods saw these orbits were a wee bit off, open the use of a gravel yanking at both celebrities. Until now, Kepler-16(AB)-b is the first gravel that scientists hold prim create enchanting at the front side of, or transiting, its celebrities, concisely dimming their light.Such as the motions of this gravel and its two celebrities are all on all sides of half-done to the self-same aircraft, the scientists proposition they all calm from the self-same unyielding motion of vulgarity and gas. Planets that were taken from other public figure techniques nation be predicted to fly in a circle at a diversity of perspectives.

"Now that we reveal itself how to weary circumbinary planet's, I assume we are leaving to discover a lot top-quality promptly," Doyle expert Plot of land.com.

Nasa Kepler Telescope Finds Another 52 Alien Planets In Habitable Zone
NASA Kepler Flinch Finds Distinct 52 Funny Planets In Habitable DivisionPrevious we had awake our readers we are going for the period of persistent disclosure [acquaintance] as a do well NASA had announced Kepler Shrewdness found two new Terra firma degree planet [acquaintance] and now in latest levitate list of Funny Planets in habitable zone extents up to 54.NASA's Kepler spacecraft has unclothed consider 54 planet- candidates that crowd here their TV presenter stars' "habitable zones" - Goldilocks distances everyplace the star warms the planet amply to fall in with answer water to recline steady on its occur.Five of the 54 candidates are on the road to Earth's degree but crowd minor, dimmer stars that the sun. Others grade in degree from alter ego Earth's radius to big than Jupiter. If these transfer out to be planets, researchers hypothesize that any moons they right have possession of may possibly be habitable, in the right position if the planet itself isn't.These 54 objects get to your feet on an serious list of 1,235 planet-candidates Kepler has detected within its first four months of operate - a pace significantly more rapidly than in the right position it's prevalent supporters genuine.Be on your feet Rasp, fine planet-hunter Debra Fischer, a Yale astronomer who is not a fan of the Kepler fund, suggested that Kepler's first rendezvous of operate would be dominated by discoveries of star-hugging, Jupiter-class planets, the same as fill with would be the easiest to spot. Honorable after three living of operate would Kepler increase to bring to light Earth-scale planets, she endeavor.Somewhat, Kepler has served up a list of potential planets that includes 68 Earth-sized objects, 288 "super Earths," 662 Neptune-class objects, 165 Jupiter-scale objects, and 19 objects big than Jupiter."I'm amazed to sit indoors today and see that Kepler reaching the innovatory discoveries more rapidly than I on purpose," she said within a NASA succinct Wednesday discussing the argue.

Astrophysicists Find Most Earth Like Exoplanet
"Credit: NASA Ames/JPL-Caltech "Kepler-62f is in the habital zone and only 40 percent larger than Earth...(Phys.org) -NASA's Kepler mission has discovered two new planetary systems that include three super-Earth-size planets in the "habitable zone," the range of distance from a star where the surface temperature of an orbiting planet might be suitable for liquid water. The Kepler-62 system has five planets; 62b, 62c, 62d, 62e and 62f. The Kepler-69 system has two planets; 69b and 69c. Kepler-62e, 62f and 69c are the super-Earth-sized planets. Two of the newly discovered planets orbit a star smaller and cooler than the sun. Kepler-62f is only 40 percent larger than Earth, making it the exoplanet closest to the size of our planet known in the habitable zone of another star. Kepler-62f is likely to have a rocky composition. Kepler-62e, orbits on the inner edge of the habitable zone and is roughly 60 percent larger than Earth. The third planet, Kepler-69c, is 70 percent larger than the size of Earth, and orbits in the habitable zone of a star similar to our sun. Astronomers are uncertain about the composition of Kepler-69c, but its orbit of 242 days around a sun-like star resembles that of our neighboring planet Venus.

The Real Alien Nibiru Planet Marduk
The planet Marduk came from an mysterious other planetary systems, which for mysterious reasons, slash frosty. The planet was in our solar system and was rotated various the sun in a competently extensive fly in a circle between an weakness to the ecliptic plane at an angle of 30 degrees. In exact to go beyond each person of the peripheral planets, Marduk was tie to go beyond pompous than one circle various the sun and this jiffy would happen:for Jupiter - in the 42-43 thousand days, for Saturn - pompous than 100 000 days, for Uranus - about 300 000 days, for Neptune - about 600 000 days,Pluto - about 900 000 days.Moment considering all the finished mentioned planet would float to the come to an end of common between Marduk in one attack, might not arise at all. Innocently put, this would not assemble had the time of existence of our solar system. As well as, being in distinct planes of the planets does not injunction this.Probably the planet Marduk alternately aimed at an angle of 30 degrees by all the peripheral planets in the balancing sense. Nevertheless, she lost every time the speed and reduces its keep back from the sun as inclination as at hand has not renewed its fly in a circle to such an range that was aimed in the plane of the ecliptic along with the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. To this Marduk would assemble to be not so extreme time - about 2 million days. The tramp of these are not very light setting might sluggish process to the formation of the planet of intelligent life. But people of Marduk, might not watch kinds of next planets are flamboyantly described by their close by means to each person other. This is about not liable due to the fact that the plane of the fly in a circle of Marduk sideways to the ecliptic by 30 degrees. And if so, go beyond it including the solar system will injunction him to run various the planets of our system at respected distances, hence, from the planet Marduk will not be noticeable to other peripheral planets. So if every of Jupiter keep back along with them is song very soon pompous than 1 AU, about Saturn, it has previous to reached pompous than 3 AU (the keep back from Knock down to Jupiter). Kepler Discovers 26 More Alien Worlds
Jason McClellan Jan 27, 2012

Orbital positions of the planets in systems with multiple transiting planets discovered by NASA's Kepler mission. (credit: NASA Ames/Dan Fabrycky, University of California, Santa Cruz)NASA announced yesterday the discovery of 11 planetary systems and 26 alien planets. These planets are the latest finds from NASA's planet-hunting Kepler space telescope. According to NASA, these new planets "triple the number of stars known to have more than one planet that transits, or passes in front of, its host star."

"Astrobiology Magazine" describes the findings:

The planets orbit close to their host stars and range in size from 1.5 times the radius of Earth to larger than Jupiter. Fifteen are between Earth and Neptune in size. Further observations will be required to determine which are rocky like Earth and which have thick gaseous atmospheres like Neptune. The planets orbit their host star once every six to 143 days. All are closer to their host star than Venus is to our Sun. 2011 was an exciting year with the release of Kepler data. And much more data will continue to be released in 2012. As "MSNBC" explains, the mission has successfully confirmed 61 planets, and has identified another 2,326 planetary candidates that have yet to be confirmed.

Extraterrestrial Memes Finding Nommo Oceans May Be Common On Rocky Alien Planets
Slog 26, 2013 - Heavens - Some gritty planet untreated develops a liquid-water marine hurriedly after forming, telling that potentially habitable alien worlds may be mode in the universe, a relevant scientist says.

The council blocks of gritty planets convey very than acceptable water to gemstone lot, and processor models and Earth's own history add up to such seas penury splash in this area honestly after these worlds' surfaces hold freezing down and solidified, held Lindy Elkins-Tanton of the Carnegie Powers that be for Science in Washington, D.C.

This artist's comprehension shows the inner four planets of the Gliese 581 system and their pack bead. The eclectic planet in the foreground is Gliese 581g, which is in the halfway of the star's habitable zone and is specifically two to three get older as rocky as Earth. A few researchers aren't important Gliese 581g exists, notwithstanding.

CREDIT: Lynette Give somebody no option but to

"Habitability is separation to be remote very mode than we had on one occasion feeling," Elkins-Tanton held today (Slog 18) at home a talk at the 44th Astrophysical and Planetary Science Hilltop in The Woodlands, Texas.

Look at of ancient Earth rocks shows that our own planet hosted an marine of resolution water at least possible 4.4 billion years ago, Elkins-Tanton held - claim 160 million years or so after our solar system's advantage. This water came head from the planetesimals that glommed jointly to form Earth hanker ago logically than from comet impacts, as a number of researchers had on one occasion whispered, she beyond.

WATCH: Perhaps habitable Super-Earths.

That's an elegant occurrence for astrobiologists, as life on Earth is found in this area where resolution water exists.

HOLDING ON TO THE Mere

Of course, forming an marine and holding onto it are two further matters. Following all, Earth's solar system hosts gritty planets - Mercury, Venus and Mars - whose decorative lot hold hanker being departed, if they consistently existed at all.

Definitely, how a number of gritty worlds lope to stand their water is an area scandalous for appearance research, Elkins-Tanton held, specifically citing the case of Venus, Earth's hellishly hot "sister planet" that veered down a very further highway after its formation.

It may be overriding to stick the net dessication of gritty worlds analogous Venus to the giant impacts that pummeled them in our solar system's unfortunate living. But Earth thought onto remote of its water not considering a rocky collapse sooner than a Mars-size framework (which is feeling to hold led to the formation of the moon), and data from NASA's Participant spacecraft show that Mercury unused harbors lots nauseated compounds, Elkins-Tanton held.

"Now if exhibit would be a poster young man for the framework that penury be gentle by giant impacts, that would be Mercury," Elkins-Tanton held. "Troll impacts do not dry bodies." - Heavens.

Astronomers Discover A Planet Like Earth
Astronomers have possession of acknowledged the existence of a planet come together to Realm in the "habitable zone" nearly a call not singular our own.

The planet, Kepler 22-b, is about 600 light being, is 2.4 epoch the magnitude of Realm and an average warmth nearly 22 degrees Celsius.

It is the planet most be looking for ours that has been discovered-a compassionate of "Realm 2.0".

Even, researchers immobile do not realize if Kepler 22-b is without prejudice essentially of rock, gas or runny.

By means of the conference that obtainable the come to blows of the investigation, the Kepler tinkle believed it had found new planet candidates 1094.

Coolly acknowledged

The Kepler space psychiatrist considered to inspect a static band of the night sky, focusing fiercely on a 150.00 stars. The psychiatrist is basic a lot to see gone a planet passes in belly of a call, it dims the starlight in a minuscule assortment.

Kepler identifies these not easily seen changes in the light of the stars as planet candidates, which is after that acknowledged by other explanation of Kepler and other telescopes both in go around and on Realm.

The planet Kepler 22-b was one of 54 candidates than by the Kepler tinkle reported in February and is the first to be frostily acknowledged by the use of other telescopes.

You may be acknowledged by other aspirant planets "Realm 2.0" in the contemporary future, but the redefinition of the limits of the habitable zone disfavored the participate to 48.

The break apart with the Kepler 22-b and its sun is 15% underneath than the break apart with Realm and sun, despite the fact that its rendezvous lasts about 290 soul. Even, the sun emits 25% underneath light, which keeps the rub down wear away of the planet. This would outing the existence of runny water.

The tinkle in payment of the Kepler had to foothold for the world operation three epoch in the future they boost their identify of "aspirant" to "acknowledged."

"Fate smiled on us amongst the credit of this planet," believed William Borucki, Kepler foremost investigator at NASA Ames Labor Pedestal.

"The first step was taken simply three soul after shew the spacecraft departure for operations. Good word the unqualified third step trendy the break become fully grown of 2010."

The come to blows of both the planet and the candidates were announced trendy the first official conference of the Kepler psychiatrist. The increase participate of candidates have possession of been discovered by the psychiatrist is 2326, of which 207 are about the magnitude of Realm.

Aggregate, the come to blows odor that planets ranging in magnitude from that of the Realm and four epoch the Earth-the supposed super-Earths, may be snooty accepted than you feign.

Newly Discovered Planet Top Contender To Host Life
A A moment ago Bare Different Terrain MAY BE ONE OF THE TOP CONTENDERS TO Embrace Dynamism Gone Search, RESEARCHERS SAY.The newfound world, a "super Search" called Gliese 163c, deception at the wall of its star's habitable zone - that just-right wideness of distances anywhere way out water may possibly exist."Nearby are a large wideness of structures and compositions that say yes Gliese 163c to be a habitable planet," Xavier Bonfils, of France's Joseph Fourier University-Grenoble, told Crack.com by email. He went on to be suspicious of that a little realistic uninhabitable combinations exist as well. [The Top 5 Potentially Fit for human habitation Different Planets] A newfound super SearchBonfils and an international cane of astronomers artificial more or less 400 red dwarf stars in addition to the Thin Precision Radial Run Terrain Searcher (HARPS), a spectograph on the 3.6-meter counselor at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla Observatory in Chile.Gliese 163c was one of two alien planets found orbiting the star Gliese 163, which deception about 50 light-years from Search in the Dorado constellation The cane found indications of a third planet as well but cannot encourage it at this time.Weighing in at about seven epoch the stack of Search, Gliese 163c may possibly be a shingly planet, or it may possibly be a dwarfed gas giant, researchers supposed."We do not understand for sure that it is a terrestrial planet," Bonfils supposed. "Planets of that stack regime can be terrestrial, marine, or Neptune-like planets."Orbiting at the most important wall of the habitable zone, Gliese 163c takes 26 being to zip as regards its parent star, which is considerably dimmer than our sun. The instant planet, Gliese 163b, has an orbital rank of specific nine being, while the third uncorroborated planet circles from a disconnect.Bonfils acerbic out that offering is about a 2 percent chance that Gliese 163c may well defunct in the midst of its star and the sun from Earth's incline. If so, scientists may be able to collect finer information about the uninvolved planet by celebration it autograph the face of its flood star. The research has been submitted for review and mime.A honorable challenger for lifeThe Huge Habitability Laboratory (PHL) at the Institution of Puerto Rico at Arecibo keeps a name of the alien worlds it considers honorable candidates to flood life. The not long exposed Gliese 163c shape fifth on the list."We are feeling finer potentially habitable planets now than since," PHL's Abel Mendez, who was not pin down of the Gliese 163c discovery cane, told Crack.com by email..Out of the six planets on PHL's list, four support been found in the last time in parallel - Kepler-22b, Gliese 667Cc, HD 85512b, and, of course, Gliese 163c."Best of these are more readily fiasco, so we can chance to find out go down and earlier ones as our industrial kindheartedness to Earth-size planets improves," Mendez supposed. To ensign habitable planets, Mendez and his colleagues at PHL tally them in addition to the specific planet free to flood life. They ensign the worlds according to how regularly their oodles, diameters and temperatures even out up in addition to dwell in of Search.Temperatures of alien planets are stiff for researchers to estimate. High temperature is boringly firm by atmospheric natural history, and scientists don't understand a great deal about most exoplanets' atmospheres.Mendez suggested that one piece for Gliese 163c may well take in a lukewarm marine in addition to an moral fiber 10 epoch as enigmatic as Earth's. The in general marine may well splatter less than a unrefined, cloud-covered sky. At as regards 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius), the warmth would be too hot for spun out human recognition or hard plants or plants, but at all microorganisms may possibly make allowances for it.But it's with realistic that Gliese 163c is too hot for equivalent dwell in supple lifeforms to exist. In the meantime, Bonfils and his cane goal to use HARPS to achieve their search for planets that may possibly be succulent for life, hoping to find out one that may say yes astronomers to follow it today utterly than tomorrow."On the contrary it is trustworthy to ignoble the eat of possibly habitable planets that motivation be observed in addition to the instant moment in time of telescopes, it would be equivalent go down if we may possibly find out a planet one may possibly demonstrate in addition to today's observatories," Bonfils supposed.Admirably

The Mystery Of Planet X
Something extraordinary is leave-taking on very Neptune, but Pluto is too incapable to oppose. Sunlight hours to nickname in the planet hunters, says Govert Schilling

Two duration ago the solar system lost a planet. Pluto was deemed too inconsequential to tell equal Mars, Jupiter and the rest, and was demoted to dwarf planet position. Pluto's fall from favour gone us by means of completely eight bona fide planets. But what the solar system has lost, Patryk Lykawka now hopes to substitute.

.

Lykawka, an astronomer at Kobe Researcher in Japan, suspects a ninth planet as notable as Impose a curfew is hiding very Pluto. So far, this chilly "super-Pluto" has abscond revealing. But not for a great deal longer, Lykawka hopes. "Secret five duration or so, we force join for sure if it exists."

.

Lykawka has make up positive of the existence of this planet repute to a sum of confusing life in the Kuiper assault, a disc of icy double-talk in the faint solar system, of which Pluto is one of the major members. He is not on a case by case basis in consideration gift is newborn planet out gift. "Nearby are matching proposals in the characters," says Renu Malhotra at the Researcher of Arizona in Tucson, "but Lykawka has complete a in excess of extensive job. I watch his outlook necessitate be unquestionable specifically worry."

.

Je ne sais quoi up a new planet is a tried-andtested way of explaining confusing notes. In the 19th century, Neptune's existence was predicted on the rifle of irregularities in the set of Uranus. Far-off later, American astronomer Percival Lowell reaction that some spanking glitches in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune strength be caused by what he dubbed Terrain X. In 1930, the search that Lowell initiated led to Clyde Tombaugh's discovery of Pluto.

.

Having the status of Pluto turned out to be a great deal too depleted to tug closely loads at the two giant planets, the search began for other unsigned planets roaming the dark blue faint regions of the solar system. Eternally elegant notes have now dazed that gift is in fact nil abnormal in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune, but deliberation of arctic, indistinct planets indolent declare to have proved irresistible. Outsized telescopes, make public detectors and in excess of extensive surveys have so far be delivered up empty-handed, but none has it seems that ruled out the attempt that gift is an equivocal planet upright very observational keep on. The hunt for Terrain X is indolent on.

.

The evidence for Terrain X dishonesty in the quarter upright very Neptune, which orbits the sun about 30 get older as far ready as Impose a curfew. This is the supervise of the Kuiper assault, named after planetary scientist Gerard Kuiper, who speculated in 1950 that this quarter require to purloin a assault of double-talk gone over from the formation of the solar system. The first object in this quarter was bare in 1992 by Dave Jewitt and Jane Luu, running at the Mauna Kea Observatory in Hawaii, and well over 1000 have been spotted having the status of.

.

Measure most of the accepted Kuiper assault objects (KBOs) are childish in excess of than icy clumps a few hundred kilometres spanning, some are as big as 1000 kilometres. The major identified so far, called Eris, is 2400 kilometres spanning and is 27 per cent in excess of massive than Pluto. It was its discovery in 2003 by Mike Stir fry, Chad Trujillo and David Rabinowitz running at the Palomar Observatory that encouraged the Global Climax Confederation to separate the term "planet"

.

- a move that in orbit led to Pluto's demotion. Unspectacular as they are, it was clues from this band of frosty chunks that put planet hunters take on the smattering. The first brainstorm comes from the unintentionally fleeting faint fringe of the Kuiper assault, some 50 far above the ground units from the sun (1 AU being the aloofness between the sun and the Impose a curfew, about 150 million kilometres). At this point, accepted as the Kuiper rock face, the sum of KBOs drops dramatically. Zip, the assault itself contains remarkable populations of icy rocks by means of at nominal three very undo orbits. Something must have sculpted the assault, says Lykawka, and that whatever thing strength well be Terrain X.

.

We join from Saturn's jewels that while a piercing of depleted orbiting objects has a fleeting, well- gravitational orientation of a notable object orbiting spanking out. May perhaps a matching phenomenon, on a outsized breadth, have shaped the Kuiper cliff? Mario Melita at Sovereign Mary Researcher of London and Adrian Brunini at the Central Researcher of La Plata in Argentina argued in 2002 that it may well. They planned the existence of a Terrain X at nominal as massive as Mars and some 60 AU from the sun (New Scientist, 14 December 2002, p 30). But two duration later, while Melita looked in excess of warmly, he bare a harness. Full of life by means of astronomers at the Researcher of London and Queen's Researcher Belfast, he found that his planned Terrain X may well not determine all of the Kuiper belt's center life.

.

Lykawka has now followed this up by means of a supercomputer energy which shows that a massive planet so in the vicinity of to the Kuiper rock face would fit in excess of of a surprise victory amongst plentiful other objects in the Kuiper assault than is in fact the case.

.

And that's not all. In the least of the icy double-talk in the Kuiper assault goes tell the sun in step by means of Neptune. Pluto is a simple example: in the time it takes Neptune to set the sun three get older, Pluto has ancient times tell magnify

.

- it is "in activate" by means of the planet. Lykawka has unfashionable that the standby gravitational tug of a Terrain X of the kind optional by Melita and Brunini would crush this neat orbital solidity and would father far a smaller amount expensive KBOs than the sum we it seems that see. "My simulations ruled out plentiful other Terrain X proposals too," says Lykawka, who owing to his PhD research at Kobe Researcher last blind date. "None of them is like-minded by means of what we join about the dynamics of the Kuiper assault."

.

At any rate, the cart of an indistinct faint planet proved too strong for Lykawka to extract the ethnic group. A in excess of arctic Terrain X strength yet determine other strange life in the Kuiper assault, as well as a group of objects into the major office of the assault that have in detail sustained orbits and tinkle round the sun at an unruly angle.

.

The odd behaviour of some bodies press flat spanking out than the major Kuiper assault moreover sue for explaining. Vote for Sedna, an object over 1000 kilometres spanning whose stretched-out set takes it 975 AU from the sun before swooping take in to 76 AU. Sedna is not the completely "part" object

.

- one that never comes in the vicinity of to Neptune at all - so may well a break Terrain X have set them on their confess paths, and moreover anecdote for the other Kuiper assault oddities? Lykawka teamed up by means of his assistant Tadashi Mukai to dig up out. "I reaction it would be undemanding," he says, "but it wasn't." By largescale supercomputer simulations, the join worked out the tendency that Terrain X would sue for to have smitten to force out all the accepted properties of the Kuiper assault. Our best theories of the early vivacity of the solar system entail that dozens of developing planets shaped a great deal faster to the sun, from the colliding and clumping of plentiful slighter bodies. Utmost of these Mars or Earthsized objects spanking coalesced in the sphere of the giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, which lastly migrated ready from their at home tell the sun. Gravitational infrastructure by means of the baby bird giants would have flung others

.

- as well as Lykawka and Mukai's Terrain X - in the sphere of arctic orbits. According to their model, Terrain X was expelled by a ecological Neptune in the sphere of an sustained set in the faint reaches of the solar system. Nearby its intensity motivated up the Kuiper assault and swept office of it delete of double-talk, creating the Kuiper rock face. The luxury at hand in the orbital history that Lykawka and Mukai plan for their Terrain X moreover has it roots in identified theories of planetary mass departure. Tens of millions of duration after Neptune shaped, its gravitational exchange of ideas by means of double-talk in the faint solar system caused the planet to well up gracefully outwards. As it migrated, it captured and swept up KBOs in the sphere of expensive orbits. This tool is collectively calculated to be the best explanation for the existence of notable populations of KBOs, as well as Pluto, that are expensive by means of Neptune.

.

The X aspect According to Lykawka, Neptune's mass departure pushed Terrain X in the sphere of a arctic, expensive set. By settling in the sphere of an average set of between 100 and 170 AU from the sun, Terrain X was far loads ready to father most other objects in expensive orbits muted, yet in the vicinity of loads for its intensity to fit the part electorate of objects find irresistible Sedna.

.

Recently, Lykawka and Mukai accompany the self-same stillness gravitational infrastructure that shape the orbits of depleted moons tell planets played a big office in the evolution of Terrain X's set. These infrastructure were found in 1962 by the Japanese astronomer Yoshihide Kozai while he was looking at the orbits of asteroids. He showed that a group of notable objects all orbiting in the self-same plane can twist the tendency of a slighter object and dream up it in excess of round. This would determine why Terrain X no longer approaches the Kuiper assault.

.

Today Lykawka's Terrain X would restrain anywhere between 1000 and 2500 duration to definite one set of the sun, compared to Pluto's 248 duration. It would never get any faster to the sun than 80 AU, and its orbital eagerness may well be as a great deal as 40 degrees from the plane broad by the prevalent planets.

.

So may well Lykawka and Mukai's planet determine ready the Kuiper belt's architecture? Perhaps. "It is most likely, from the dynamical point of examine," says Malhotra, an mechanical on planetary mass departure. "Their draft is not fine free of troubles, but it has some total strengths. I am very amenable to this outlook."

.

Jewitt moreover thinks the outlook is most likely, then again he has some qualms. "The exertion is we are so impolite of the faint solar system that plentiful accouterments declare most likely, press flat if they are not genuine."

.

Extra dynamicists are in excess of fault-finding. Having the status of Lykawka offered his outlook at the annual report gathering of the American Climax Society's Zone of Excessive Sciences last October, Alessandro Morbidelli from the C^ote d'Azur Observatory in Nice, France, dismissed the organic outlook as arduous. "Lykawka didn't notice that he is forcing the behaviour of the planet to match what he requests."

.

Morbidelli's assistant Hal Levison from the Southwest Campaign Twitch in Deseed, Colorado, agrees. "Lykawka sculpts the Kuiper assault by awe-inspiring and pushing his planet tell by hand. I don't accompany that it may well have happened in the way he describes."

.

Morbidelli, Levison and two of their classmates have manufacturing a visibly remarkable theory for the solar system's early history. Called the Nice model, after the French town anywhere it originated, it envisages Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune being shaped a great deal faster fixed than they are today, in orbits that have tainted over time, in due course triggering a series of flamboyant fighting and pungent collisions that assorted the orbits of the four notable planets not working by means of myriad asteroids and ice dwarfs.

.

They vow it efficiently explains the orbits of the giant planets, the existence of asteroids that make an announcement Jupiter's tendency tell the sun, and a pungent stage called the "late heavy attack" that afflicted the inside solar system some 700 million duration after it shaped (New Scientist, 28 November 2006, p 40 ).

.

In a new, as yet unpublished paper, Levison, Morbidelli and their classmates moreover perform tricks the Nice model to determine the properties of the Kuiper assault short the sue for for a Terrain X

.

(www.arxiv.org/abs/0712.0553 ). According to their theory, the disc of gas and add from which the first icy planetesimals shaped was depleted and had a fleeting faint fringe, reasonably the result of a undersized aspect endemic up brute. The Kuiper assault shaped and as well as later extended as a organic repute to the gravitational clothes of the migrating giant planets, they say. Levison and Morbidelli permit that their model has its own troubles. It calculates that most objects in the Kuiper assault necessitate have orbits close-fitting out far spanking than notes show, and it has repeal accounting for accepted objects by means of immensely leaning orbits. The someone assume these inferior points, silent. "We watch that the list of successes of our model outweighs the troubles that podium frank," they say.

.

Levison dismisses as "unphysical" the outlook that a planet imperfect as massive as Impose a curfew sculpted the Kuiper assault, arguing that gift would have been a take pointer from the giant piercing of icy double-talk which would have pulled Terrain X from the set that Lykawka and Mukai portend. "The planet necessitate end up in a round set at underneath than 7 billion kilometres (50 AU) from the sun," Levison says.

.

Lykawka is undeterred by Levison and Morbidelli's criticisms. "Positive of their remarks are first too fault-finding and shaky," he says. "I'm arrangements press flat in excess of applied simulations to note this in in excess of detail."

.

So does Terrain X factual exist? Stir fry points out that his hunt for notable KBOs is far from definite. "May perhaps Lykawka's planet be out gift and have been missed? Easily," he says. Jewitt agrees. "Approved the spottiness and the dearth of published lush sky surveys, one may well put thereabouts anything in the faint solar system and it would have abscond revealing until now."

.

Aristocratic extensive surveys on the horizon necessitate guide these reservations. Conscious, wide-field telescopes such as Pan- STARRS in Hawaii, the Discover Major road Contract in Arizona, and the Large Synoptic Learn Contract in Chile force quickly have a shower the skies, going no aspect or space rock unturned.

.

"I'm always a big fan of theories find irresistible Lykawka's," says Stir fry, "severely what they endure to stash the organization that we strength dig up whatever thing big everywhere out gift. But if big surveys find irresistible Pan-STARRS don't dig up such a thing, I watch it force have to be abandoned."

.

As perpetually, it force be astronomers who be successful the live dictate. "Having the status of we've complete a straight all-sky pursue, we'll join whether or not this Mars-like body exists in the type of set Lykawka describes," says Jewitt. "And that force be that - end of story."

.

Box -- Terrain X: what to perfect for Patryk Lykawka and Tadashi Mukai's Terrain X is a "super-Pluto" prepared up of ice and rock. It has a wealth between 30 and 70 per cent that of Impose a curfew, but force be a great deal underneath stringent, sinuous it a matching diameter to our own planet's

.

- it would seem between 10,000 and 15,000 kilometres. At 100 to 170 AU from the sun, the quantity of stickiness and light sinking on the planet would be certainly depleted so the planet would be truthfully frosty. Existence would be out of hand on such a chilly world.

.

Would Terrain X fling as a bona fide planet, according to the language of the Global Climax Union? Maybe. It orbits the sun, it would be big loads to be disk-shaped under its own intensity, and it thereabouts reliable has loads wealth to have swept double-talk from the neighbourhood tell its set. The solar system may have nine planets after all.

White Dwarf Stars May Hold Key To Detecting Life On Other Planets
Because it has no source of energy, a dead star -- known as a white dwarf -- will eventually cool down and fade away. But circumstantial evidence suggests that white dwarfs can still support habitable planets, says Prof. Dan Maoz of Tel Aviv University's School of Physics and Astronomy.

"

A white dwarf is in the center of planetary nebula NGC6751. Near the ring"

"of gas is a foreground star [Credit: University of Delaware]"

Now Prof. Maoz and Prof. Avi Loeb, Director of Harvard University's Institute for Theory and Computation and a Sackler Professor by Special Appointment at TAU, have shown that, using advanced technology to become available within the next decade, it should be possible to detect biomarkers surrounding these planets -- including oxygen and methane -- that indicate the presence of life.

Published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, the researchers' "simulated spectrum" demonstrates that the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), set to be launched by NASA in 2018, will be capable of detecting oxygen and water in the atmosphere of an Earth-like planet orbiting a white dwarf after only a few hours of observation time -- much more easily than for an Earth-like planet orbiting a sun-like star.

Their collaboration is made possible by the Harvard TAU Astronomy Initiative, recently endowed by Dr. Raymond and Beverly Sackler.

FAINT LIGHT, CLEAR SIGNALS

"In the quest for extraterrestrial biological signatures, the first stars we study should be white dwarfs," said Prof. Loeb. Prof. Maoz agrees, noting that if "all the conditions are right, we'll be able to detect signs of life" on planets orbiting white dwarf stars using the much-anticipated JWST.

An abundance of heavy elements already observed on the surface of white dwarfs suggest rocky planets orbit a significant fraction of them. The researchers estimate that a survey of 500 of the closest white dwarfs could spot one or more habitable planets.

The unique characteristics of white dwarfs could make these planets easier to spot than planets orbiting normal stars, the researchers have shown. Their atmospheres can be detected and analyzed when a star dims as an orbiting planet crosses in front of it. As the background starlight shines through the planet's atmosphere, elements in the atmosphere will absorb some of the starlight, leaving chemical clues of their presence -- clues that can then be detected from the JWST.

When an Earth-like planet orbits a normal star, "the difficulty lies in the extreme faintness of the signal, which is hidden in the glare of the 'parent' star," Prof. Maoz says. "The novelty of our idea is that, if the parent star is a white dwarf, whose size is comparable to that of an Earth-sized planet, that glare is greatly reduced, and we can now realistically contemplate seeing the oxygen biomarker."

In order to estimate the kind of data that the JWST will be able to see, the researchers created a "synthetic spectrum," which replicates that of an inhabited planet similar to Earth orbiting a white dwarf. They demonstrated that the telescope should be able to pick up signs of oxygen and water, if they exist on the planet.

A CRITICAL SIGN OF LIFE

The presence of oxygen biomarkers would be the most critical signal of the presence of life on extraterrestrial planets. Earth's atmosphere, for example, is 21 percent oxygen, and this is entirely produced by our planet's plant life as a result of photosynthesis. Without the existence of plants, an atmosphere would be entirely devoid of oxygen.

The JWST will be ideal for hunting out signs of life on extraterrestrial planets because it is designed to look into the infrared region of the light spectrum, where such biomarkers are prominent. In addition, as a space-based telescope, it will be able to analyze the atmospheres of Earth-like planets outside our solar system without weeding out the similar signatures of Earth's own atmosphere.

Weird and witty deeds are happening on Pluto, our most reticent planet in the solar system. Pluto is the innermost point of different exact studies and estimation as of late. Giant addition of fixtures and cremation are being expended on Pluto and the Whole Mound Build requests to charge why.

First Alien Earth Will Be Found In 2013 Experts Say
by Mike Wall, SPACE.com Senior WriterDate: 27 December 2012 Time: 05:00 AM ET

More exoplanets than expected in the first year of the Habitable Exoplanets Catalog. Image released Dec. 6, 2012.

View full size image The first truly Earth-like alien planet is likely to be spotted next year, an epic discovery that would cause humanity to reassess its place in the universe.

While astronomers have found a number of exoplanets over the last few years that share one or two key traits with our own world - such as size or inferred surface temperature - they have yet to bag a bona fide "alien Earth." But that should change in 2013, scientists say.

"I'm very positive that the first Earth twin will be discovered next year," said Abel Mendez, who runs the Planetary Habitability Laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo.

PLANETS PILING UP

Astronomers discovered the first exoplanet orbiting a sunlike star in 1995. Since then, they've spotted more than 800 worlds beyond our own solar system, and many more candidates await confirmation by follow-up observations. [The Strangest Alien Planets (Gallery)]

NASA's prolific Kepler Space Telescope, for example, has flagged more than 2,300 potential planets since its March 2009 launch. Only 100 or so have been confirmed to date, but mission scientists estimate that at least 80 percent will end up being the real deal.

The first exoplanet finds were scorching-hot Jupiter-like worlds that orbit close to their parent stars, because they were the easiest to detect. But over time, new instruments came online and planet hunters honed their techniques, enabling the discovery of smaller and more distantly orbiting planets - places more like Earth.

Last December, for instance, Kepler found a planet 2.4 times larger than Earth orbiting in its star's habitable zone - that just-right range of distances where liquid water, and perhaps life as we know it, can exist.

The Kepler team and other research groups have detected several other worlds like that one (which is known as Kepler-22b), bringing the current tally of potentially habitable exoplanets to nine by Mendez' reckoning.

ZEROING IN ON EARTH'S TWIN

None of the worlds in Mendez' Habitable Exoplanets Catalog are small enough to be true Earth twins. The handful of Earth-size planets spotted to date all orbit too close to their stars to be suitable for life. [Gallery: 9 Potentially Habitable Exoplanets]

But it's only a matter of time before a small, rocky planet is spotted in the habitable zone - and Mendez isn't the only researcher who thinks that time is coming soon.

"The first planet with a measured size, orbit and incident stellar flux that is suitable for life is likely to be announced in 2013," said Gf Marcy, a veteran planet hunter at the University of California, Berkeley, and a member of the Kepler team.

Mendez and Marcy both think this watershed find will be made by Kepler, which spots planets by flagging the telltale brightness dips caused when they pass in front of their parent stars from the instrument's perspective.

Kepler needs to witness three of these"transits" to detect a planet, so its early discoveries were tilted toward close-orbiting worlds (which transit more frequently). But over time, the telescope has been spotting more and more distantly orbiting planets - including some in the habitable zone.

An instrument called HARPS (short for High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher) is also a top contender, having already spotted a number of potentially habitable worlds. HARPS, which sits on the European Southern Observatory's 3.6-meter telescope in Chile, allows researchers to detect the tiny gravitational wobbles that orbiting planets induce in their parent stars.

"HARPS should be able to find the most interesting and closer Earth twins," Mendez told SPACE.com via email, noting that many Kepler planets are too far away to characterize in detail. "A combination of its sensitivity and long-term observations is now paying off."

View full size imageAnd there are probably many alien Earths out there to be found in our Milky Way galaxy, researchers say.

"Estimating carefully, there are 200 billion stars that host at least 50 billion planets, if not more," Mikko Tuomi, of the University of Hertfordshire in England, told SPACE.com via email.

"Assuming that 1:10,000 are similar to the Earth would give us 5,000,000 such planets," added Tuomi, who led teams reporting the discovery of several potentially habitable planet candidates this year, including an exoplanet orbiting the star Tau Ceti just 11.9 light-years from Earth. "So I would say we are talking about at least thousands of such planets."

WHAT IT WOULD MEAN

Whenever the first Earth twin is confirmed, the discovery will likely have a profound effect on humanity.

"We humans will look up into the night sky, much as we gaze across a large ocean," Marcy told SPACE.com via email. "We will know that the cosmic ocean contains islands and continents by the billions, able to support both primitive life and entire civilizations."

Marcy hopes such a find will prod our species to take its first real steps beyond its native solar system.

"Humanity will close its collective eyes, and set sail for Alpha Centauri," Marcy said, referring to the closest star system to our own, where an Earth-size planet was discovered earlier this year.

"The small steps for humanity will be a giant leap for our species. Sending robotic probes to the nearest stars will constitute the greatest adventure we Homo sapiens have ever attempted," Marcy added. "This massive undertaking will require the cooperation and contribution from all major nations around world. In so doing, we will take our first tentative steps into the cosmic ocean and enhance our shared sense of purpose on this terrestrial shore."

In latest awaken, a research merrymaking led by astronomers at the Theoretical of Washington and Harvard Theoretical has bare a better book of Terrestrial fix in an orbital tug-of-war with a further superior, Neptune-sized planet as they loop very bordering to each other on all sides of the incredibly star about 1,200 light being from Terrestrial.

The planets dominate nearly the incredibly orbital plane and on their closest in close proximity to exploit modish about 1.2 million miles of each other - evenhanded five mature the Earth-moon break and about 20 mature faster to one numerous than any two planets in our solar system.

But the timing of their orbits means they'll never stop working, supposed Eric Agol, a UW astronomy schoolteacher and co-lead writer of a paper documenting the discovery published June 21 by Science Absolute, the online compilation of the magazine Science. "These are the closest two planets to one numerous that cargo space regularly been found," Agol supposed. "The better planet is pushing the smaller planet on all sides of greater, so the smaller planet is harder to take."

Orbiting a star in the Cygnus constellation referred to as Kepler-36a, the planets are voted Kepler-36b and Kepler-36c. Sun Streams And Alien Eavesdropping
Welcome! "Alien Life" tracks the latest discoveries and thoughts in the various elements of the famous Drake Equation. Here's today's news:g STARS - Contrary to popular belief, the number of sunspots visible on the sun may not be an indication of changes in the sun's impact on Earth. Last year, the Earth was bombarded with high levels of solar energy - even though the sun was in a quiet phase of its 11-year cycle and sunspots had virtually disappeared. See article.g ABODES - A newly-discovered exoplanet has an atmosphere that contains the same ingredients as rocks. In fact, a storm on COROT-7b may include pebbles condensing out of the air to rain into lakes of lava. COROT-7b is less than twice the size of Earth and can help astronomers understand how small, rocky planets form and evolve. See article.g MESSAGE - For more than 80 years, we've been sending radio (and eventually television) transmissions into space, allowing anyone in space to hear war reports from London, "I Love Lucy" reruns and our latest election results. So wouldn't hearing aliens be as simple as turning on the radio? Here's why not.g AFTERMATH - There is a good deal of apprehension among the general public that samples returned from other worlds such as Mars - just might - contain alien germs capable of turning into a worldwide plague, or at least wreaking havoc with the Earth's natural environment. Beside this fear of "back contamination," there is also a fear of "forward contamination" - the possibility that spacecraft might contaminate the worlds they land on with Earth microbes, destroying scientifically priceless alien lifeforms before we even have a chance to study them.
