The Miracle of the Sun (Portuguese: O Milagre do Sol) refers to an event on 13 October 1917, when 30,000 to 100,000 people gathered near F'atima, Portugal, to witness an expected miracle. Three young shepherd children had predicted that at high-noon, the Blessed Virgin Mary would appear in the Cova da Iria fields.
According to many witness statements, after a downfall of rain, the dark clouds broke and the sun appeared as an opaque, spinning disc in the sky. It was said to be significantly duller than normal, and to cast multicolored lights across the landscape, the shadows on the landscape, the people, and the surrounding clouds. The sun was then reported to have careened towards the earth in a zigzag pattern, frightening some of those present who thought it meant the end of the world. Witnesses reported that their previously wet clothes became "suddenly and completely dry, as well as the wet and muddy ground that had been previously soaked because of the rain that had been falling".
Some of the witness statements follow below. They are taken from John De Marchi's several books on the matter.
"Before the astonished eyes of the crowd, whose aspect was biblical as they stood bare-headed, eagerly searching the sky, the sun trembled, made sudden incredible movements outside all cosmic laws - the sun 'danced' according to the typical expression of the people." - Avelino de Almeida, writing for O S'eculo (Portugal's most widely circulated and influential newspaper, which was pro-government and anti-clerical at the time Almeida's previous articles had been to satirize the previously reported events at F'atima).
"The sun, at one moment surrounded with scarlet flame, at another aureoled in yellow and deep purple, seemed to be in an exceedingly swift and whirling movement, at times appearing to be loosened from the sky and to be approaching the earth, strongly radiating heat." - Dr. Domingos Pinto Coelho, writing for the newspaper Ordem.
"...The silver sun, enveloped in the same gauzy grey light, was seen to whirl and turn in the circle of broken clouds... The light turned a beautiful blue, as if it had come through the stained-glass windows of a cathedral, and spread itself over the people who knelt with outstretched hands... people wept and prayed with uncovered heads, in the presence of a miracle they had awaited. The seconds seemed like hours, so vivid were they." - Reporter for the Lisbon newspaper O Dia.
"The sun's disc did not remain immobile. This was not the sparkling of a heavenly body, for it spun round on itself in a mad whirl, when suddenly a clamor was heard from all the people. The sun, whirling, seemed to loosen itself from the firmament and advance threateningly upon the earth as if to crush us with its huge fiery weight. The sensation during those moments was terrible." - Dr. Almeida Garrett, Professor of Natural Sciences at Coimbra University.
"As if like a bolt from the blue, the clouds were wrenched apart, and the sun at its zenith appeared in all its splendor. It began to revolve vertiginously on its axis, like the most magnificent firewheel that could be imagined, taking on all the colors of the rainbow and sending forth multicolored flashes of light, producing the most astounding effect. This sublime and incomparable spectacle, which was repeated three distinct times, lasted for about ten minutes. The immense multitude, overcome by the evidence of such a tremendous prodigy, threw themselves on their knees." - Dr. Formig~ao, a professor at the seminary at Santar'em, and a priest.
"I feel incapable of describing what I saw. I looked fixedly at the sun, which seemed pale and did not hurt my eyes. Looking like a ball of snow, revolving on itself, it suddenly seemed to come down in a zig-zag, menacing the earth. Terrified, I ran and hid myself among the people, who were weeping and expecting the end of the world at any moment." - Rev. Joaquim Lourenco, describing his boyhood experience in Alburitel, eighteen kilometers from Fatima.
"On that day of October 13, 1917, without remembering the predictions of the children, I was enchanted by a remarkable spectacle in the sky of a kind I had never seen before. I saw it from this veranda..." - Portuguese poet Afonso Lopes Vieira.
According to De Marchi, "Engineers that have studied the case reckoned that an incredible amount of energy would have been necessary to dry up those pools of water that had formed on the field in a few minutes as it was reported by witnesses."
De Marchi claims that the prediction of an unspecified "miracle", the abrupt beginning and end of the alleged miracle of the sun, the varied religious backgrounds of the observers, the sheer numbers of people present, and the lack of any known scientific causative factor make a mass hallucination unlikely. That the activity of the sun was reported as visible by those up to 18 kilometres (11 mi) away, also precludes the theory of a collective hallucination or mass hysteria.
Pio Scatizzi, S.J. describes events of F'atima and concludes: The solar phenomena were not observed in any observatory. Impossible that they should escape notice of so many astronomers and indeed the other inhabitants of the hemisphere. Either all the observers in F'atima were collectively deceived and erred in their testimony, or we must suppose an extra-natural intervention.
Joe Nickell, a skeptic and investigator of paranormal phenomena, claims that the position of the phenomenon, as described by the various witnesses, is at the wrong azimuth and elevation to have been the sun.
Jacques Vall'ee has contributed to the investigation of the Miracle at Fatima and Marian apparitions. His work has been used to support the Fatima UFO Hypothesis. Vall'ee is one of the first people to speculate about the possibility that the Miracle at Fatima was a UFO. This wasn't initially recognized as such due to lack of knowledge about UFOs at that time. It is believed by many that if they were aware of the UFO phenomenon that they would have initially assumed it was a UFO instead of a miracle. Vall'ee has also speculated about the possibility that other religious apparitions may have been the result of UFO activity including the Miracle of Lourdes and the revelations to Joseph Smith. Vall'ee and other researchers have advocated further study of unusual phenomena in the academic community. They don't believe that this should be handled solely by theologians. My wife Synthia and I arrived last week Wednesday 21st at London's Heathrow Airport on a Virgin Airline's flight from hell. I don't mean the departure city of New York was the place of hell, but the flight was. New York, like many parts of the United States, was suffering a heat wave and sitting on the tarmac before taking off with cabin temperatures well over 100 degrees (F) was not only horrible, it was frightening. With no air conditioning working and seats so close that my near six-foot tall body was forced to form a 'Z' to even fit the space, the scene was set. Babies crying, everyone flapping magazines and safety cards next to their faces to stay conscious; it was truly the worst set of conditions I've experienced in several decades of international flying. Without spending a second more on this, it seems the primary thing to learn was about the aircraft itself; don't fly on an Airbus. On to the research.
I saw my first crop formation on the flight in as the Airbus dropped below 20,000 feet on our descent towards London. The aircraft flew just south of the huge bridge carrying the M4 motorway between south Wales and South West England. The design (shown as # 43 here: http://colinandrews.net/Crop-Circles-2010.html ), which looks like rippling waves from two pebbles thrown into a pond and coming together in an interference pattern, was just visible as a patch in the field. Unfortunately, due to our schedule that was to be the closest we would get to that crop circle design!
By Friday July 23rd, we were able to inspect two significant patterns. Both were 3-D designs, one at Danebury Ring near Andover, Hampshire ( # 36 ) and the other (# 42 ) near Fosbury. I have fond memories of Danebury Ring, a wonderful iron age hill fort where my parents used to take us kids for picnics as we lived a few miles south in the village of Enham. The crop circle phenomenon has been a wonderful tool to bring families back out into the countryside and we have remarked on more than one occasion that we rarely see people without their children in the fields. The designs seem to have something for all ages.
On Friday evening we joined Dr. Simeon Hein and Busty Taylor with their wonderful group who were touring the circles and ancient sites. Simeon and Busty had arranged private access into Stonehenge just before Sunset, a great experience we were privileged to have. It's hard now to consider that the fenced-in stones we are not allowed to touch were the site of more childhood picnics. Mum and Dad used to cut sandwiches and pour from a flask of coffee as we used the fallen stones for our picnic table. This place always brings back happy memories. These days though, even with a pass to be inside the fencing and among the stones, security guards stand nearby to ensure that no one touches them. No hands, no leaning on stones, no burying crystals and the like, etc...
Through meditation and inner silence, I have always tried to feel connection with the stones, which sometimes was very difficult, but this visit was different. The stones were purring. I got the sense that if I could hear what I was feeling, the stones would be buzzing. It's the feeling cat owners know, when after a busy day the cat sits on your lap in total contentment, connecting with you. Their purring creates coherence between you and nature that can induce an altered state and send you to other realms or even to sleep; that was what was happening at Stonehenge this time.
Saturday morning (July 24) was an early start to a meeting I had arranged with Phil Hoyle, the primary researcher investigating increasing numbers of UFO reports in Wales. Synthia and I left Andover in Hampshire and headed to Marlborough in Wiltshire to collect the group with Dr. Simeon Hein and Busty Taylor. We drove in convoy to Presteigne, central south Wales where people have been experiencing a wide range of events, including farmers seeing lights and beams both above and inside their fields at night, followed by dead and mutilated sheep. The reports seem to follow the classic animal mutilation scenarios that have occurred in many countries, especially the United States. Phil graciously agreed to my request to set up a meeting with some of the eyewitnesses.
Assembled in the town's Memorial Hall was Bill (surname withheld), a retired Aerospace Engineer, Doris Matthews, a housewife and Ken (surname withheld), a retired police officer, each with an extraordinary experience to share. Joining us were my long time friend and researcher Paul Anderson, and Philip Goodyear, a CSETI (UK) member who had just left Dr. Steven Greer (now on his way back to the USA).
Phil Hoyle gave us general background to the range of experiences reported in the vicinity around Raydnor Forest and a little beyond before introducing the eyewitnesses. He explained that another important witness who was planning to attend was unable to at the last moment; this was one of the farmers who had observed the lights in his fields and found mutilated sheep on his farm
We spent several hours listening to, and asking questions of, the witnesses.
Bill, an aerospace engineer and manager, spoke of a lifelong interest in the sky and space in general after his father had an unusual sighting when Bill was a child. With a 360 degree view from his home on a hillside at Builth Wells, Powys, Wales, Bill made it his practice to end each day looking into the dark night sky. Apart from aircraft and satellites, he saw nothing unusual until the 1st June, 2009, when, during his usual evening survey, he was shocked to see a large white glowing disc-shaped object above a tree about 300 feet away from him. It was huge, he said, and "as soon as I caught sight of it, it sped away at colossal speed." It had no sound and when asked, Bill acknowledged that he had the distinct impression that 'it' knew he was there and left because he had spotted it.
Doris Matthews told us that she was being driven by her daughter along a quiet road when they were surrounded by flashes of light coming from above them, although they could not see the source. The flashes stayed with them as if an object was directly over their car. Doris wanted to get out and confront the object, or at least see what it was, but her daughter was terrified and speed faster and faster towards Doris's home. The lights stayed overhead. Before they reached the house, a mist suddenly enveloped them and a bright light illuminated them and their surroundings such that it was brighter than day. Doris claimed that it was so bright she could see every detail on the houses, etc. Another person travelling in the area reported an identical experience that same night. Doris reported her case to the police and an investigation was conducted although nothing was concluded.
Doris described a nasty boil-like wound that developed afterwards on her chest, requiring medical attention. Her car also had a strange burn mark on the hood which was analyzed by the police with no result. The wound turned out to be a very deep infection that was difficult to heal, requiring daily packing for several months. The scar is still there. Her daughter has been experiencing strange occurrences around her home since this event took place. This reminded me of other witnesses who have also reported that they seemed to have taken 'something' home with them from their encounters.
To name two such cases, the Joyce Bowles encounter with tall beings near Winchester in 1976 and the Wiltshire policeman who witnessed three tall beings next to Silbury Hill a year ago. (See report on the website: http://www.colinandrews.net/UFO-PoliceSergeant-SilburyHill.html )
Next at the meeting to share his experience was another former policeman, Ken, who had his encounter on the outskirts of Bristol while driving home after his work shift. He was passing the entrance gate of a research facility when he saw an eight-to-nine foot tall being. With no other vocabulary to express it, he called the being a 'spaceman'. The being was wearing a one-piece suite and a helmet with a black visor over his eyes. Ken said that as he was not on duty and had no idea what he was looking at, he went straight home, arriving still in shock. Although he told his wife, who did not believe it, he decided not to make an official report fearing professional repercussions. The next day he learned from the newspaper of two other people who reported seeing a 'spaceman' looking into their car at Chilcomb, near Winchester, after their car engine failed. Ken was reading about the famous Joyce Boyles and Ted Pratt encounter mentioned above. Both Ken's event and theirs happened the same night in 1976. Chilcomb is about seventy miles southeast of Bristol.
In a separate event, on the 31st December last year at St. Harmon, Powys, Wales, Ken's son came rushing in from the quiet cul-de-sac where they lived calling for Ken to go outside and look at an object in the sky that had the whole street outside. Ken said that he could not believe what was going on. Lots of the neighbours were out in the street watching a large orange ball-shaped object which had landed at the end of the street [distance to be clarified? ]. A neighbour had a tripod and telescope set up and Ken was able to look through it at the object. He said it was very bright and looked liquid due to the movement within it. Although he had not thought about it before, hearing Doris's account made him wonder about a skin cancer under his right eye which has been surgically removed two times and yet keeps returning. Phil pointed out that there was at least 20 years between Ken's sighting in 76 and the arrival of the cancer.
Phil spoke of the on going experiences of farmers in the area who continue to report mutilated sheep and strange lights. The lights have now been captured on film by Phil and the team of researchers he works with.
Although the stories people told were captivating, the greatest effect for Synthia and me wasn't from the events, but from the impact the events clearly had on these ordinary people in extraordinary situations. These people's lives were completely altered and the emotion the events still carried for them was touching. Ken, Bill and Doris had not met each other before this meeting, and as each told their story, the others learned something about their own experience that they hadn't realized. The authenticity of each person's reaction as we watched them put pieces together made this remarkable.
After the meeting Simeon and Busty departed with their group to Wiltshire as Synthia and I headed northwest to the Welsh coast near Aberystwyth. We dropped in to visit four standing stones near Raydnor, set quietly in the countryside next to a farm house. We have spent meditation time with these truly wonderful stones before, but this time, as with Stonehenge a couple hundred miles away, the connection was more alive than ever before. Very pleasant and peaceful. We also stopped in to meditate at The Pales, a Quaker meeting house at the top of the mountain range, looking down over the Valley. Synthia has always aligned with Quaker practice and we were reminded of the principles of living according to our inner truth and not deferring to those in positions of power, or supporting institutions, who perpetuate injustice on the planet. An extraordinary day.
Yesterday (27th) we spent the day with Jan Delgado, the daughter of the late Pat Delgado, my friend and first co-author. We visited the high-strangeness area of Silbury Hill and West Kennett Long Barrow and also spent time conducting an experiment in a new crop circle design found in the South Field at Alton Barnes (see at: http://www.cropcircleconnector.com/2010/Eastfield/eastfield2010a.html ). Before the passing of Paul Vigay followed by Pat Delgado, the three of us had formulated a new series of experiments with sound. Pat had already recorded sounds emanating from trees at Cheesefoot Head which were very similar to the recordings of sounds secured in crop circles back in the 1980's. Synthia, Jan and I attempted to carry out some of the protocol using ground probes in this crop circle.

I have never believed in UFOs however, I saw this same green light last night 12/13 around 11:30 p.m. on my drive home. I was facing/driving south on Canterbury Road in Shakopee, MN between Valley View and Eagle Creek roads.
The green light was only there for about 1 or two seconds and it was below the clouds and went in the direction of a local casino that shines lights into the sky.
Very strange. My wife was and the car and she also saw it. Where else has this been seen? Do we know what it is?

These are also called the Black Triangles, though given that many sightings are at night, this may be a difficult call.
Anyway, UFOs have come in a lot of different shapes through the years, and still continue to do so. Trends in the appearance of reported UFOs can be interesting, but simple statements do mask the diversity, and the persistance of supposedly "out-dated" reports of disc or cigar-shaped UFOs. But one trend that has been remarked on from time to time is the growing popularity of triangle-shaped UFOs. I don't know if more Triangles are reported than in the past, but they do seem to be involved in more multiple or even mass witness cases.
There are numerous cases, but the four famous Triangle cases that define the others are the Hudson Valley sightings (1983 - 1985, see the book Night Siege in the sidebar for details, put back in print in 2002 after being difficult to obtain), the Belgian sightings (March 30, 1990), the Phoenix Lights (March 13, 1997), and the Illinois "Cop" Case (January 5, 2000 documented at a great page at the UFO Evidence website). In these cases, black triangles (sometimes smaller, but usually much larger and typically described with "football fields" as a unit of measure) are sighted moving low and slow. They have lights, often with a red light in the center of the ventral side of the triangle, and then brighter lights near the corners. But in a number of cases a rainbow of lights is described along one of the narrow edges of the triangle.
These sightings have attracted a great deal of attention for many reasons. Again, there are individual sightings of the Triangles. But the cases listed above were all multiple witness sightings (including mass witness sightings by hundreds of people) over populated areas. In the case of the Belgian sightings and the Illinois case, government officials were involved (Belgian fighter jets were scrambled, most of the Illinois witnesses were police officers from several departments) and photographs were taken (here is an example on Lieve Peten's site). Someone looking for a nuts-and-bolts UFO report couldn't do much better than the Triangles, except perhaps to get a piece of one or some clear and sustained daytime imagery of one, preferably from multiple sources to discount Photoshopping.
One problem immediately rears its head: the sightings are so good, they are too good. Yes the cases are famous spawning television documentaries and books and mainstream news reporting. But as I quoted in a previous entry in this blog " if a conspiracy theory turns out to be correct, it is quickly relabelled as investigative journalism"and this applies to the Triangles. Because they do have many of the characteristics of actual objects sighted by many people, including "credible" authorities, the reaction outside of the Spooky Paradigm is to admit the sightings may be of something real, but that it must be something exotic, but not too exotic.
Like experimental US military aircraft. This makes sense. The US was experimenting in the 1970s and on with black triangular aircraft as part of its stealth program. While none of the known US aircraft fly like the Triangles (in particular, slow or hovering low-altitude flight), perhaps the Triangles are something that hasn't been released to the public yet. Perhaps a stealth long-range transport ship. Perhaps using lighter-than-air, or even exotic antigravity technology. Perhaps the witnesses didn't understand exactly what they were seeing. This is the conclusion from a detailed study of the triangles by the National Institute for Discovery Science. (see also this page for various articles, maps, etc.). As with animal mutilations, they got interested in the Triangles as they seem to have more data to handle. Their conclusion was that the triangles may be experimental transport aircraft, and that they appear to cluster around airbases for transport and logistics (pdf here, jpg map here).
There are two problems with the experimental aircraft idea. The first is that ufologists can point to older cases of triangular sightings. Ok, but there does seem to be an upswing in sightings, and especially the impressive multi-witness sightings, starting around the time the Americans began building stealth craft and flying them out in Nevada at Groom Lake and other facilities (though these French sightings date to 1975-1976, when the F-117 was still a concept being worked out). Perhaps the earlier Triangles are not related to the post-1983 Triangles. There are only so many basic shapes thagt one could use to describe an unfamiliar object in the sky, and triangle is likely to come up. A rise in sightings of black triangular UFOs just at the time that the USAF starts flying secret black triangular planes is just a coincidence? Somewhat difficult to believe. So this I can live with.
What bothers me when I think about these reports is the time depth if this were a secret plane. It is a truism that secret planes typically stay secret for no more than a decade, and perhaps significantly less. This issue comes up with reports of the supposed Aurora, another mystery UFO of the stealth era. As discussed on the website of the Federation of American Scientists, Aurora is the label given to reports of a high-altitude, high-speed, sonic-boom generating triangular (hence why it is sometimes conflated with the low-altitude Black Triangles) aircraft. In both cases, sightings continued for a substantial period of time, but there is one major difference. Aurora sightings (and recording of sonic booms) are largely confined to the late 1980s and the early to mid 1990s. One could conceivably argue that Aurora was what so many think: a replacement for the SR-71 in the niche of the high-altitude high-speed reconaissance and potentially strike aircraft. Perhaps some prototypes were created and flown, but ultimately the project was cancelled, and the entire thing kept secret perhaps due to extravagant costs, spectacular failure, or scandalous corruption. Who knows, but this is a believable excuse for why the plane could have been in operation for half a decade and then disappeared behind National Security/Cover-Your-Ass.
But this explanation simply doesn't work for the Triangles. They have been sighted for more than two decades (here is a multi-witness sightings in Venezuela from last month) so far with no end in sight. And if they are advanced transport aircraft, there have been enough American wars and military actions that one would imagine they would have been used. And if they are so secret for decades, why fly them over populated areas, in some cases multiple times over the course of a year or more as in the Hudson Valley case?
Historian Richard Dolan wrote a good and more detailed essay similar to this one for the National Institute for Discovery Science, back in 2003. While I am sure I must have read this essay, I forgot about it until tonight. Yes, we agree on a number of points, and reach some similar conclusions. But where Dolan suggests a possible ET origin for some of the Triangles due to lack of disclosure as a military craft, I take his other suggestion as more likely. That the reports are indeed of structured non-ET craft, perhaps stealthy, perhaps for transport. But the continued secrecy points to a very different kind of relationship between whoever flies the craft, the federal government, and the American people. Or as Dolan puts it, a "shadow government." Such a craft would clearly have value in a war, say by rapidly deploying troops and equipment in difficult to reach places (such as Afghanistan in 2001, or Northern Iraq in 2003). But no such craft has emerged, nor have stories by soldiers of having ridden in or unloaded such craft.
If these obvious cases for using the Triangles didn't unveil them, then what are they being saved for? This is where, as Dolan notes, things start to get dark. Quiet craft able to deploy military or police forces, and being tested and flown around urban areas? Developed by someone in the US government but not used to fight its wars? This starts to lead to disturbing ideas to say the least.
And hence this post. The Triangles confound easy explanation as hoaxes or folklore. They seem to exist. They certainly sound like something a military would, and possibly could, create. And in fact they look at least something like recent creations for the US Air Force, though with major differences. Yet for decades they haven't been revealed as such, even when their use could have won wars or saved lives (imagine a black triangle descending on the Convention Center in New Orleans in September 2005, rescuing hundreds of the trapped and dehydrated people, continuously ferrying everyone out in the course of some hours). This might lead some to suggest a non-human explanation for what appear to be structured mechanical air craft, while it would lead others to think about a military or intelligence organization that has such aircraft, but is not beholden to the will of the people and their elected representatives.
Either option disturbs me.
