INTRODUCTION BY DAVID MARLER
Research into the UFO subject is problematic at best. Not only are UFO investigators faced with a myriad of UFO reports that vary as much as the eyewitnesses themselves, but they also have the task of trying to make sense out of the disparate reports and try to find meaning in a sea of confusion.
Starting in the late 1980s, one subset of UFO reports began to gain prominence in the UFO field. These reports involved very large triangular objects. This appeared to be a new trend facing UFO investigators. Today, these ubiquitous reports dominate this field of inquiry. With each passing year, more reports continue to pour in regarding these mysterious objects.
Despite the wealth of eyewitness reports, little had been seriously written on the subject beyond magazine and website articles. I decided to dedicate myself to the task of writing the first comprehensive analysis of triangular UFOs. There needed to be serious work done in this area to not only define the subject matter itself, but examine the historical nature of these reports. This needed to be a narrowly-focused and serious examination of the data that refrained from idle speculation and conspiracy theories. The idea of writing such a book was not a decision I arrived at overnight.
My interest in this particular subset of reports was initially piqued by the now-famous wave of triangular UFOs over Belgium from 1989 to 1991. There were literally hundreds of highly-credible reports of these objects seen over that country in addition to radar confirmation as well. As if the accounts were not intriguing enough, the approach taken by the Belgian military towards the subject publicly was equally compelling. There were no denials or outlandish explanations to rationalize away these reports. They were taking the subject quite seriously.
Despite this intriguing wave of UFO reports, I was confronted with a similar wave of UFO reports that occurred one early morning on January 5th, 2000 over southern Illinois. At the time, I lived in the general area and was well-suited to investigate the case given my proximity to the sighting locations and my background on the subject. Multiple police officers and other eyewitnesses reported seeing a large triangular UFO that was illuminated and behaved in a fashion similar to what was reported in Belgium ten years prior.
Like Belgium, police officers were in radio contact with one another during the sightings and the reports were not summarily dismissed, but taken rather seriously. Most intriguing, was the fact the UFO flew by within one mile of Scott Air Force Base. Unlike Belgium, military officials were not forthcoming with information or answers.
Upon seeing the parallels between the Belgian and southern Illinois reports despite the distances between the two areas and the separation of ten years, I decided to then launch a comprehensive historical analysis to collect, collate, and analyze UFO reports of this type. I have developed a detailed profile of these objects as well as a rich narrative outlining their history.
I incorporated triangular UFO reports derived from various newspaper archives; declassified military reports; UFO books and journals; as well as first-hand interviews. Together, these sources provided a wealth of case material that I analyzed. Coupled with this are contributions by prominent individuals from the military, FAA, and Aerospace field.
I tackle the arguments made by skeptics that dismiss these triangular UFO reports outright. I also address the claims of so-called insiders that claim these UFO reports are a creation of the U.S. military. I also enlist the insights of colleagues in the UFO field for their impressions and thoughts pertaining to this mystery within a mystery.
The results of my years of research are documented in my book: "Triangular UFOs: An Estimate of the Situation". This is the first comprehensive book dedicated to the triangular UFO mystery. I hope it serves as the definitive book on this most elusive subject for many years to come.
