What it boils down to is personal belief. And therein lies the dilemma. There are always opposing sides. WHERE TO BEGIN? The starting point (I believe) is determining if there is in fact intelligent life beyond our own. The Drake Equation would point to "yes" using mathematical probability as it's basis. While this may be considered reasonable proof that intelligent life beyond our own does exist, it does nothing to prove the life out there is intelligent enough to have mastered space travel. Life beyond Earth may very well have evolved at a different pace. Or the planets that can sustain life may be in the early stages of evolution. Or they may not be interested in space travel or reaching us at all. On the other hand, the universe is an old place and in the scheme of things, we as a species are mere infants. There could be civilizations that are millions of years older than our own out there and if they are out there, is it possible that they could have mastered space travel? Is it possible that they are here (or have been in the past)? WHO BELIEVES WHAT? When the subject of aliens is raised, the assumption is that these beings are much more advanced than we are, and are coming here for some purpose unknown to us. The theory of governments of the world having secret dealings with these beings in exchange for technology has been discussed in years past (i.e. conspiracy theories). However as with all UFO debates, they typically lead nowhere since there is always the lack of definitive proof. For the most part, eyewitness accounts comprise the bulk of evidence gathered to date. While there are many well trained and respected people who have reported sightings, the primary focus seems to fall within the fringe element of the UFO communities. These are the people who claim to possess the ability to psychically communicate with aliens and/or have alien children aboard spacecraft they have visited on a recurring basis. These claims of course have never been substantiated. WHAT ABOUT ALIEN ABDUCTIONS? Alien abduction accounts rely strongly on the testimony of the alleged victim, with regressive hypnosis being used to recover lost memories (such as in the Betty and Barney Hill abduction case). Recordings are made during these sessions to prove there are no leading questions being asked when the procedure is used by UFO investigators. It seems that there are far too many unanswered questions to draw reasonable conclusions one way or the other. I personally believe that finding intelligent life beyond our own is the first step to finding some answers.
